18. Proposal Writing

The written proposal is an integral component of any major gift solicitation. It must have a clear message, be persuasive and must effectively convince the potential donor that your institution and/or program deserves support. Major gift proposals written to an individual, corporation or foundation, can be entered in this category. Judges will look for compelling and persuasive writing, a solid program description and a clear statement of what you are asking of the donor, and presentation. Writing 

38. Staff Writing

Articles by full- or part-time staff members appearing in a single periodical (magazine, tabloid or newsletter that is published at least twice year) or on a web site are eligible. Staff must be on the payroll, and their names should appear on the masthead or in a byline. Articles by contributing editors who are paid by the piece are not eligible. Submit tear sheets or printed copies of web stories of five articles that are representative of the scope and variety of the staff writing. Criteria include writing style, organization, creativity of story ideas and development, and editing.

39. Best Article

These are individual articles written by staff or guest writers. They may cover any subject matter but must have appeared in an institutional magazine, tabloid, newsletter, or web site. Speech summaries, question-and-answer stories, and reprints (partially or completely from other periodicals or sources) are not eligible. Send tear sheets only.

40. Excellence in News Writing

Five individual web stories or news releases representative of the scope and variety of your news service staff writing will be reviewed. Submit entries in one of the following categories:

a. General news writing: Staff-written news items intended for the external general news media.

b. Research, medicine and science news writing: Staff-written material targeted to the external research, medical or science news media.
