Inaugural District II Venture Capital Fund Awards Announced

02.08.08

The inaugural District II Venture Capital Fund awards were announced today by the District II Board’s Venture Capital Fund committee. Awards totaling $10,000 will be made to nine institutions for new programs for advancement professionals and institutions in District II.

Sixteen applications were submitted for funding, representing over $30,000 in requests. The District II board had authorized $10,000 in grants, so the competition was fierce.

Because the demand for Venture Capital Funds was so great, some programs were funded for an amount less than requested, in cases where the committee felt that the program could be scaled back but still have impact.

“We were overwhelmed with the response to the program,” said Anne Berry of Lebanon Valley College, chair-elect of the District II board, and a member of the Venture Capital Fund committee. “In the end we tried to fund proposals that would have an impact on some groups within District II that are not as well-served by the annual conference, including community colleges, corporate/foundation and advancement services professionals.

"We also provided funding for what we see as an important study of staff recruitment, development and compensation practices that will be coordinated by Marywood University. Many District II members cite staff recruitment and retention as one of their most vexing problems and we are looking forward to sharing the results of this project with District II members.”

Formal award letters are being sent today from the office of Tilghman Moyer at Muhlenberg College, a District II director and member of the Venture Capital Fund committee. David Sowers of Franklin & Marshall College is the third member of the Venture Capital Fund committee and District II's treasurer.

District II member institutions and professionals may apply for Venture Capital Funds at any time by using the online submission form. The next round of applications will be reviewed in mid-August.
